The San Francisco Brass Company was formed in 1998. Members have performed with the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Ballet , San Jose Symphony, Bay Brass and Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Italy) under such distinguished batons as Michael Tilson Thomas and Zubin Mehta. The members also hold principal positions with several Bay Area regional orchestras. The ensemble enjoys performing a wide variety of repertoire ranging from Renaissance and Baroque music to contemporary arrangements of jazz and musicals. Past performances include appearances at UC Davis, the San Francisco Community Music Center, Grass Valley's Music in the Mountains Festival, and many other Northern California venues. Education being a high priority, the ensemble regularly performs outreach programs in Bay Area public schools. SF Brass Company players hold positions on the faculties of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's Preparatory Division, University of California at Davis, American River College and the Community Music Center of San Francisco.

SFBC Individual Biographies

Bruce Chrisp
 

Bruce Chrisp is the principal trombonist with the Marin, Santa Rosa, Fresno, Napa Valley, Santa Cruz County, Vallejo, and Carmel Bach Festival orchestras. He has also performed with many other orchestras including the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Opera, the San Francisco Ballet, the Oregon Symphony and the Virginia Symphony. He received his Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Michigan and his Master of Music Performance degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His major teachers have been Mark Lawrence, H. Dennis Smith and Edward Zadrosny. Mr. Chrisp has performed in many festivals including the Salzburg summer festival, the National Orchestral Institute, the Music Academy of the West, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, and the Ernest Bloch Festival. He is currently the Instructor of Trombone at UC Davis and is on the Preparatory Faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. bruce@sfbrasscompany.com

Kale Cumings
 

Kale Cumings, a native of Sparta, Michigan, began trumpet studies at the age of fourteen. A graduate of Wheaton College and Northwestern University, he is active as a freelance orchestral player, soloist, clinician, and teacher. He has performed with many orchestras including the San Francisco Symphony, the San Jose Symphony, the Sacramento Symphony, and the Grand Rapids Symphony. He also holds regular positions with the Santa Rosa Symphony and the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. Zachary Limacher
Zachary Limacher, hornist, is a freelance musician concentrating primarily on orchestral and chamber music. Orchestrally, he has been a member of the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra since its debut season and performs frequently with other orchestras throughout the Bay Area. He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, and toured with the San Francisco Opera Center's Western Opera Theater. In addition to The San Francisco Brass Company, Zachary's chamber music experience includes membership in Citywinds. A native of the Chicago area, Zachary began his music studies with the violin at a young age in Joliet, Illinois. At age nine, he began to study horn in addition to violin. Zachary continued his horn studies at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb with John Fairfield; Salzburg College in Salzburg, Austria with Wilhelm Schwaiger; Amici della Musica in Florence, Italy with Radovan Vlatkovic; and in San Francisco with A. Scott Macomber
 

Scott Macomber is principal trumpet of the Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra and the Napa Symphony, as well as a member of the Santa Rosa Symphony, Sacramento Philharmonic, Cabrillo Music Festival, Sacramento Symphony Brass, and the San Francisco Brass Company. Scott is on faculty at U.C. Davis as well as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory and Extension Division. He has also appeared with the San Francisco Symphony, San Jose Symphony, and the Bay Brass. An avid performer of contemporary music, Scott has performed in over 25 world premieres of solo, chamber, and orchestral music. Scott holds degrees from Northwestern University, where he studied with Vincent Cichowicz, and from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with David Burkhart. scott@sfbrasscompany.com

Steve Trapani
 

Steve Trapani, bass trombonist, is currently a member of the Sacramento Philharmonic and Sacramento Choral Society Orchestras, and is on faculty at California State University, Fresno. Steve was a member of the New York City Opera National Company from 1998 until 2000. A native of Fairfield, California, Steve is active as a free-lance bass trombonist and performs with such orchestras as: the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet Orchestras, the Santa Rosa Symphony, and numerous others. Steve has performed in Italy with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the batons of Zubin Mehta, Ricardo Muti, and Semyon Bychkov. Steve has toured and recorded with John Tesh, and has recorded for the motion picture industry. Steve's principal teachers are John Engelkes, bass trombonist of the San Francisco Symphony, and Jeff Reynolds, bass trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. steve@sfbrasscompany.com
